Sorted from cheapest to most expensive per year – be aware that Shopify does charge a 2%transaction fee so the yearly cost in the table is only a fraction of what you will actually have to pay – don’t say I didn’t tell you.

Notes
1. Shopify charges you per transacion (on top of the monthly fee) your true first year costs will be significantly higher. For stores with an annual turn over of $50,000 you would need to add $1000 to the first year cost of ownership.
2. We went with the cheapest option from each provider
3. BigCommerce has waived the setup fee for February 2011 – the regular price is $49.95 which we assume will apply from March 2011
4. None of these cost include the cost of a domain which should be sourced from a third party – that cost is on average $12.00 per year
5. GoDaddy offers discounts from 5% if you pay yearly
6. As with Shopify this does not reflect the true yearly cost of a Yahoo Store because they charge an additional 1.5% of every sale you make.
7. AShop offer discounts if you pay yearly
* These carts provide a free shared SSL certificate to all customers, however you are urged to invest in your own

Andrew,
Have you had any experience with Highwire and would you recommend it, we currently use Ashop’s hosted platform but are currently exploring cheaper alternatives. Ashop seems to have more features than most but runs at about $99 a month (it does include a payment gateway though).
Thanks
I have had a brief look at Highwire – never heard anything bad about it so you should be right – as always wade in slowly with the free trial – if you do go with it we would love to hear how it went.
Andrew,
Appreciate your information / reviews on various hosted carts as I decide my direction.
Wondering how you would compare these to Serif Webplus X4 ?
It seems to be amazing web design software with included e-commerce & hosting.
Seems I can easily enough create custom designs on my own versus hiring a developer to customize a hosted cart.
Thanks,
Larry
I just spent half an hour on their website Larry, it looks OK, but I am not sure what sort of features it has – it might be a little limited.
Well it seems ALL the hosted cart templates kind of look the same.
And they all put the products for sale right on first page, with limited back pages for information etc.
If I were to use one of these solutions,
is there no way to have an individual home page as the starting point,
without hiring developers to custom design it ?
I realize the whole point is to sell things.
But putting your whole catalog of products on page 1 doesn’t seem to be the best solution.
Like I said, most “templates” seem so similar.
hi was wondering which ones of the above accept credit cards outside of US?
Most offer a full package service but accepting international credit cards makes my business so much easier.
Also is it advisable to use SSL certiificates outside of the original service provider? e.g. verisign / comodo / geotrust / trustwave
See below: BigCartel does.
I use Big Cartel for two different lines of work, and so have two stand-alone shopping cart sites that tie to my primary site. I’ve always been happy with Bit Cartel. Payments go through Paypal, so I process credit cards and shipments everywhere in the world. They answer questions within a day, they have good analytics on the dashboard, they are easy to use. Nice to see them rank highly in this post too.
Whatever happened to 1shoppingcart. is it any good anymore or has time passed it by with these newer systems
